We love to celebrate!

The sunshine has certainly been kind to our anniversary celebrations so far and the heat was well and truly on at the Bowmen Of Adel 70th Birthday Windsor shoot on Sunday.

Archers, wearing party hats, competed in glorious weather shooting various variations of the Windsor round. We all enjoyed a plentiful feast which seems to get better and more creative at each event. The strawberries and meringues seemed the firm favourite.

The results saw Kimberley Applegate take second place and Max Oakley take 1st place in the Junior category. In the grown-up category it was a really close call right until the end and saw Darren Clarkson take 1st place over Austin Denton by only 6 points. Both winners were awarded with a pretty special 1948 sixpence keyring.

The afternoon also saw some great achievements with Elizabeth Glassup (Bessie to us all) achieving a fantastic score of 252 at 10 yards in only 3 dozen arrows. At 9 years old this is a brilliant effort and allows her to claim her very first Archery GB progress award.

Also, at the final Junior distance, young Max Oakley’s arrows seemed to be attracted to only the golds as he scored a maximum 9 points for every one of his 3 dozen arrows shot. Superb job Max. Finally, we must also mention Darren Clarkson who shot two 6 gold ends which pretty much sums up an awesome day or does it….

Our wonderful Anniversary organiser, Damian Clancy, decided to throw in one final extra end which included the re-appearance of the Polo’s; you should have seen Nicky’s face! A rather special honour awaited the person who could shoot the most polos in 6 arrows and that honour was claimed by our Chairman, Darren, who got to blow out the candles on our 70th Birthday cake.

A selection of photos can be viewed by clicking   here     thanks to Mr Oakley for those, but big thanks need to go to Damian for organising yet another successful anniversary event. Don’t panic if you missed this one, we still have more to come and would love to see as many members as we can at each event.

Yorkshire County Championships 2018

Our counties annual outdoor championships took place over the weekend of 2nd and 3rd June at Grange Park Sports Club in Wetherby. Some of our lovely members braved the wet weather of Saturday and enjoyed the warmer weather on Sunday to compete.

Darren Clarkson, our new club Chairman, shot fantastic new personal bests on both days as well as achieving his 1000 Fita Star award. He has decided to celebrate by investing in a new waterproof archery hat! Well done Darren, a great effort.

Two of our Junior members also took part on both days. Tom Oakley, shooting a Metric 1 round on the Saturday took 2nd place in the Under 18 Boy Recurve category. This is the first time Tom has competitively shot this round, having just moved up to the under 18 category this season. The longest distance Tom shot at the event was 80 yards so this was a fantastic effort.

Also on the Saturday, our Max Oakley took 1st place in the Under 12 Boy Recurve category, shooting a Metric 4 round for the first time too. The score he achieved in this round was enough for his third and final entry to achieve his Junior Master Bowmen classification with a Recurve bow. On the Sunday Max shot a Bristol 4 round and again placed 1st in his age category with a personal best score an incredible 100 points above his previous best. Finally, the score Max achieved on Sunday also meant he was awarded the overall Yorkshire Boy Champion in the Recurve category, scoring the highest score of all the under 18 male archers. Super results Max, keep it up.

Competitions in our region are a great place to get to know fellow archers of all ages and abilities. They are very friendly and welcoming and give you the opportunity to shoot at different locations, enjoy our sport and have fun. If you think you would be interested in taking part in a competition, speak to our chairman Darren or Nicky Oakley who can give you some more information.

The Nock

Yes, next Monday (May 28th  – bank holiday) it’s “The Nock”

And that means I can use this picture again!
This is the first of the season’s major in-club events. The most important fact to remember is that this is a handicap shoot – which often means that it is won by those who are improving, not necessarily those at the top of their game, so anyone has a chance, regardless of bow type.

  • Sighters are at 11am
  • The rounds used are the “Western” family – four dozen at one distance, four at the next distance down. You can shoot 100/80 yards if you want, right down to 30/20. So no excuses there
  • Lunch will be taken after the first distance, probably around 1ish. This is usually the highlight of the day, but very much depends on what food is brought. It does help a) if you could bring something and b) let Carol (carol.wood28@talktalk.net) know what you are bringing. If you can’t, a small contribution to the catering tin can be made. The old standards of chilli and veggie curry will probably make an appearance.
  • The second distance will start after lunch. If you couldn’t make the morning, you can still take part, by shooting one of the “Warwick” family of rounds – 2 dozen plus 2 dozen. So no excuses there.

It is a beautifully gentle day, with no stress or pressure. If you haven’t been shooting outdoors yet, it is the perfect reason to get out in the inevitable Bank Holiday sunshine.
And enjoy some food.

And afterwards

At an unspecified time – 15:00 or after the end of the Nock, whichever is later – we will be holding the club Annual General Meeting. Open to everyone who is a member, this is our chance to talk about what we are meant to be doing as a club, and what challenges we are facing in the coming months.
The agenda is here and last year’s minutes are here
